COPENHAGEN OPERA FESTIVAL

TRAVERS EVENTS DURING COPENHAGEN OPERA FESTIVAL IN AUGUST 2019

 

Together with Copenhagen Opera Festival, TRAVERS is hosting events during the Opera Festival in August. The events will take place in Copenhagen and are connected to the festival program. We want to gather around the work of opera and music drama by sharing knowledge and reflections – and inspiring each other through dialogue on the position of the opera and music drama in the present and the future.

WHEN OPERA IS COMPOSED COLLECTIVELY – CONVERSATION
Date: 7th August, 19:00-22:00
Place: Teaterøen, Refshaleøen, Copenhagen

‘Myth About Darkness’ is a newly-composed tribute-opera to the author and social critic Elsa Gress, which will premiere at Copenhagen Opera Festival. Elsa Gress would have been 100 years old in January 2019, and although the Danish writer and social critic lived an unusual and stormy life, her and her centennial birthday have been tragically forgotten. This summer, the opera festival and NordicOpera right this wrong, when they gather a team to pay a powerful tribute to Elsa Gress. Award-winning playwright and TRAVERS camper Alexandra Moltke Johansen has written the libretto and the musical universe is provided by the performance and sound collective We like We.

After the performance you can meet We Like We in dialogue with composer SØS Gunver Ryberg and cellist Jakob Kullberg about alternative ways of producing music, opera and music theatre. The bar will be open and we will also offer a light snack.

THE COMPOSER’S WORKSHOP – OPEN WORKSHOP
Date: 8th August, 14:30-16:30
Place: Musikskolen, Staldgade 29, Vesterbro

This afternoon the Opera Festival invites everyone for a peek inside the machinery of the creative process of an opera when composer Signe Lykke meets the string quartet Halvcirkel and the two percussionists Mathias Friis Hansen and David Hildebrandt for a workshop.

REPRESENTING A CLASSIC – CONVERSATION
Date: 8th August, 17:00-22:30
Place: Sort/Hvid, Staldgade 26-30, 1699 Copenhagen V

Sort/Hvid and the CPH Opera Festival kill off Don Juan, dig him up and have a beer with his ghost at a nightclub. Every drop of cruelty is squeezed out of Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ in this new interpretation of Don Juan.

Before the performance on the 8th we open up for a dialogue about how to interpret an old classic and make it relevant in the year of 2019? Meet artistic director of Sort/Hvid Christian Lollike in conversation with artistic director of Deutsche Opera’s experimenting stage Tischlerei and TRAVERS host Dorothea Hartmann; stage director Katrine Wiedemann and artistic director of Åbne Opera Freja Friberg Lyme. The conversation will be moderated by pianist and radio host Mathias Hammer.
After the dialogue you can mingle over a meal and watch the performance.

OPERA TALENTS OF THE FUTURE – PANEL DISCUSSION
Date: 9th August, 13:30-14:30
Place: Bethesda, Rømersgade 17, København K

The opera singer operates with some of the finest singing techniques – and gives body to many different characters throughout their career. What can a future career offer, when you need to be able to work both nationally and internationally, and how do you as a singer prepare for this? These questions and much more will be discussed by a panel of experienced opera singers: Sten Byriel, Helene Gjerris, Mikael Eliasen, moderated by Freja Friberg Lyme.

These events in August will be the first of 3 sessions from TRAVERS going on the in the next season finishing with the 3rd camp of TRAVERS, which will take place in Copenhagen in a cross-over between week 22-23 (specific dates TBA).
